Inherited from Sanskrit मशकहरी (maśakaharī, literally mosquito remover), from मशक (maśaka, mosquito) + हरी (harī, remover, from हर (hara, removing) + -ई (, doer)). Cognate with Bengali মশারি (mośari), Assamese মহৰি (mohori), Odia ମସହରୀ (môsôhôri), ମସାରୀ (môsari), Sindhi مَهَآرِي (mahārī).
