Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan, whence Punjabi ਮੱਕੀ (makkī, “maize”), from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀕 (*makkaga), from Sanskrit मर्कक (markaka, “Ardea argala”).
