Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁆- (*bheṭṭ-, “to meet”), of uncertain origin; perhaps borrowed from Munda, or from a vernacular variant of मिल् (mil, “to meet”). Cognate to Gujarati ભેટ (bheṭ), Marathi भेट (bheṭ), Punjabi ਭੇਂਟ (bheṇṭ) and ਭੇਟ (bheṭ).
