Etymology 1

Of unclear origin; the retroflex consonant conjunct (characteristic of substrate words), combined with the word's Vedic presence (characteristic of Indo-European words), has led to numerous etymologies proposed. The leading theory derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *bʰondo-, a metathesized form of *bʰudʰmḗn (bottom); compare Latin fundus (ground; foundation; estate, piece of land). The semantic development, in this case, seems to be "bottom" > "an object with a large floor" > "vessel", whence the other meanings.[1][2][3]
