Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢 (potta)[1] + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-),[2] from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑀓 (potaka /⁠pottaka⁠/), from Sanskrit पौत्र (paútra), vṛddhi derivative of पुत्र (putrá). Doublet of पौत्र (pautra).
