Etymology
Of unclear origin. Perhaps borrowed from Dravidian; compare Tamil நாணயம் (nāṇayam, “coin; honesty”). Alternatively, the Dravidian is borrowed from Sanskrit, and the word is from Prakrit [script needed] (nāṇa-), from Vedic Sanskrit ज्ञान (jñāna, “knowledge”), with a semantic shift from "knowledge" > "proof of acknowledgement" > "coin".
