Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀡𑀸𑀯𑀺𑀤 (ṇāvida), from Sanskrit नापित (nāpitá). Compare Maithili नाउ (nāʉ) / 𑒢𑒰𑒅 (nāu), Punjabi ਨਾਈ (nāī) / نائی (nā'ī), Sindhi نائيِ / हिन्दू वैदिक नाई (सैन), Gujarati નાવી (nāvī), Marathi न्हावी (nhāvī), Kamta নাউৱা (naua).
