From Proto-Indo-European *népōts. Cognate with Old Persian 𐎴𐎱𐎠 (napā), Latin nepōs, Ancient Greek ἀνεψιός (anepsiós) and Old English nefa, influenced by other kinship terms suffixed with -तृ (-tṛ) (from Proto-Indo-European *-tḗr) like मातृ (mā́tṛ, mātṛ́). Doublet of नपात् (nápāt).
