Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑀻𑀯 (dīva), from Sanskrit दीप (dīpa). Cognate to Punjabi ਦੀਵਾ (dīvā), Nepali दियो (diyo), Gujarati દીવો (dīvo), Marathi दिवा (divā). Doublet of दीप (dīp) and दीपक (dīpak).
