Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀝𑀺𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆- (*ṭikk-). Cognate to Punjabi ਟਿਕਣਾ (ṭikṇā), Gujarati ટકવું (ṭakvũ), Nepali टिक्नु (ṭiknu), Hindi टिकना (ṭiknā), Bengali টিকা (ṭika). Turner suggests a relation to Marathi टाकणे (ṭākṇe, to leave), from *𑀝𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆- (*ṭakk-).
