झूठ

Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀛𑀽𑀝𑁆𑀞 (*jhūṭṭha), related to Parachi [script needed] (ǰuṭ, concealed) and [script needed] (ǰuṭī, theft), with further origin unknown. Given the retroflex consonant 𑀝𑁆𑀞 (ṭṭh), origin from a local substrate is likely.

Cognate with Gujarati જુઠું (juṭhũ), Punjabi ਝੂਠ (jhūṭh), Bengali ঝুঁঠ (jhũṭh) and Odia ଝୁଠ (jhuṭhô).
