From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ráyas (vastness). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬢𐬵 (zraiiaŋh, sea), Northern Kurdish zirye (sea), Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎹 (d-r-y /⁠draya⁠/) (whence Persian دریا (daryâ, sea)).
