Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀺𑀩𑁆𑀪𑀸 (jibbhā) , from Sanskrit जिह्वा (jihvā́), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́iźʰwáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáH, from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s. Compare Gujarati જીભ (jībh), Konkani जीभ (jībh), Nepali जिब्रो (jibro), Punjabi ਜੀਭ (jībh), Bengali জিভ (jibh), Marathi जीभ (jībh), Romani čhib, Sinhalese දිව (diwa), English tongue. Doublet of जिह्वा (jihvā) and ज़बान (zabān), a tatsama and a Persian borrowing.
