From a Proto-Indo-Iranian [Term?] root shared with Persian چادر (čâdor, “tent, chador”), with further origin uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃- (“darkness”); compare English shade and shadow. Compare also Old English hæteru (“clothing”).
