Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀮𑀻 (*galī), related to Sanskrit कर्त (karta, “hole”), whence काट (kāṭa, “hole”) and गर्त (garta, “hole”). Cognate with Punjabi ਗਲੀ (galī) / گَلی (galī), Gujarati ગલી (galī), Sindhi ڳَليِ / ॻली, Marathi गल्ली (gallī), Bengali গলি (goli).
