Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀫𑁆𑀳𑀁𑀟 (kumhaṃḍa), ultimately from a substrate language. The Middle Indo-Aryan word was hypercorrected into Sanskrit कुष्माण्ड (kuṣmāṇḍa).
