Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀡𑁆𑀳 (kaṇha, “Krishna”), from Sanskrit कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kr̥šnás (“black”), from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (“black”). Doublet of कृष्ण (kŕṣṇa). Cognate to Gujarati કાનો (kāno), કાનુડો (kānuḍo), Assamese কানু (kanu).
