Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀓𑀳𑀸𑀡𑀅 n (kahāṇaa), from Sanskrit कथानक (kathānaka). Cognate with Gujarati કહાણી (kahāṇī), Hindustani کَہَانِی (kahānī) / कहानी (kahānī), Punjabi ਕਹਾਣੀ (kahāṇī) / کَہانی (kahānī), Odia କାହାଣୀ (kahaṇi), Bengali কাহিনী (kahini), Assamese কাহিনী (kahini).
