Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘎𑘯𑘜𑘹𑘽 (kaḷaṇeṃ), from Sanskrit कलयति (kaláyati, “counts, thinks”). Cognate with Konkani कळप (kaḷap). Compare Odia କଳିବା (kôḷiba, “to count, calculate”).
