कबाबचीनी

Hindi

Etymology

A plant native to Srivijaya, apparently a calque of Javanese kumukus (cubeb; smoke), from kukus (smoke, steam), based on Hindi कबाब (kabāb, roast meat, kebab), or this calque happened first in Arabic كَبَابَة (kabāba), which has also a convincing derivation from كِبَّة (kibba, globule; meatball); then likely acquired in Hindustani via Persian کبابه چینی (kabâba-yi čînî), کباب چینی (kabâb-i čînî, cubeb) from it.
