Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ĺ̥-ḱ-yos (“horned wild animal”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos, “red deer”), Russian лось (losʹ, “elk”), English elk. Also compare ऋश (ṛśa).

Usage notes
Although the form ऋष्य (ṛṣya) is more popular due to its use in Classical Sanskrit literature, Monier-Williams states that the word was originally ऋश्य (ṛ́śya). The original form is also attested in the Rig Veda.
