From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hā́gas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hā́gas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ég-os ~ *h₂ég-es-, from *h₂eg- (sin, crime, fault). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἄγος (ágos, pollution, guilt), Old English acan (whence English ache).
