Etymology

From अ- (a-, “not, a-”) +‎ द्भुत (dbhuta, “harmed”), the latter a past participle form of दभ् (dabh, “to harm, deceive”), literally "not able to be harmed". Not from अत्- (at-, “prefix indicating surprise”) +‎ भुत (bhuta, “(no definition given)”), despite Monier-Williams.
