Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Ancient Greek κανών (kanṓn); compare Arabic قَانُون (qānūn), Hebrew קָנוֹן (qānôn). Doublet of ܟܢܘܼܢܬܵܐ (knuntā, “rule, plumb line”), ܩܲܢܝܵܐ (qanyā, “pen”), and ܩܲܢܝܼܬܵܐ (qanītā, “canal”).
