From Middle Persian [script needed] (nārgīl), from Sanskrit नारिकेल (nārikela, “coconut”). Compare Middle Persian [script needed] (anārgēl), Persian نارگیل (nârgil), Arabic نَارْجِيل (nārjīl), and Hindi नारिकेल (nārikel).
