From ܡܲܓܵܢ (maggān, “free of charge”, adverb) + -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending), from Akkadian 𒁹𒈠𒂵𒉡 (“im-magāni”, literally “as a gift”); compare also Arabic مَجَّانِيّ (majjāniyy).
