From Middle Iranian *ātrung, later reflected in Persian بادرنگ (bâdrang, “citron”). Compare Jewish Palestinian Aramaic / Jewish Babylonian Aramaic אַתְרוּגָּא (ʾaṯruggā), Arabic أُتْرُجّ (ʔutrujj), Hebrew אֶתְרוֹג (ʾeṯrṓḡ). Ultimately from Sanskrit मातुलुङ्ग (mātuluṅga, “citron tree”).
