From Aramaic אַפַּיָּא (ʾappayyā) through Classical Syriac, originally the plural of the archaic word meaning nose, ultimately from Proto-Semitic *ʔanp-; compare Arabic أَنْف (ʔanf), Hebrew אַף (af), Akkadian 𒀊𒁍𒌝 (appum).
