Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yelpi- (hand fan), influenced by Persian بادزن (bâdzan), variant of بادبیزن (bâdbizan, hand fan). Cognate with Azerbaijani yelpik, Kazakh желпуіш (jelpuış), Kyrgyz желпнигич (jelpnigic), Turkmen ýelpewaç, Uyghur يەلپۈگۈچ (yelpügüch) and Uzbek yelpigʻich.
