Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (’y’ptn' /⁠ayāftan⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *Habí + *Hap- (to reach, attain). The prefix is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Habʰí (to, against, for), while the root is from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ep- (to take, seize, grab).[1] Cognate with Talysh آبه (ābe).
