From Middle Persian [script needed] (gwmʾn' /gumān/, “doubt”), from Proto-Iranian *wimānah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian. Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬍𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬋 (vīmanō, one of the Ahrimanic plagues: doubt?), Sanskrit विमनस् (vimanas, “sad, disconsolate”).
