Etymology 2
From Middle Persian 𐮅𐮍𐮎𐮈 (wspy), from Old Persian 𐎻𐎿𐎱 (vi-s-p /vispa/), a borrowing from Old Median [Term?] (/*vispa/). Inherited from Proto-Iranian *wícwah (“all, every; whole”), Proto-Indo-Iranian *wíćwas (“all, every”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(h₁)wiḱ/wo-.
Perhaps influenced from the Book Pahlavi script; >wisp >*gisp/t >*gišp/t >gišt.
Cognate with Parthian 𐭅𐭉𐭎𐭐 (wysp /wisp/), Sogdian 𐫇𐫏𐫘𐫛 (wysp /wisp/), Bactrian οισπο (oispo /wīsp/), Old Persian 𐎻𐎿 (vi-s /visa/), and Avestan 𐬬𐬍𐬯𐬞𐬀 (vīspa).
