Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀟 (kappaḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit कर्पट (karpaṭa, “garment, rag”), part of which is from Munda. Cognate with Marathi कपडा (kapḍā), कापड (kāpaḍ).
