Etymology

Vulgarized form of Persian چپ راست (čap-râst, left-right; diagonal, crossed), from چپ (čap, left) + راست (râst, right).

چاپراز • (çapraz)

  1. clasp, a fastener or holder made of metal, particularly one that clasps
  2. belt fastening with a metal clasp, formerly used by certain of the janissaries
  3. frog, a fastener for clothing consisting of an oblong button that fits through a loop
  4. (by extension) kind of waistcoat or jacket adorned with frogs or similar fasteners
  5. (in general) any pair of things that join after the manner of clasps or frogs
  6. (in board games) square of a chessboard; table on a backgammon board
