Kazakh

Letter

ٴ • (◌̈)

  1. A diacritic used at the beginnings of words to mark all vowels throughout the word as front vowels. (It has no sound value on its own.)

Usage notes

  • Not used in words containing ك, گ, or ە, as they also mark all vowels as front vowels.
  • If a word contains a hamza (or ك, گ, and ە) but also contains ع or ق, vowels near ع or ق will remain back vowels but all other vowels in the word will be fronted.
