From Aramaic ܝܶܫܽܘܥ (yešūʿ), from Biblical Hebrew יֵשׁוּעַ (yešū́aʿ, Jesus), a syncopated form of יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (yəhōšúaʿ, Joshua). Doublet of يَشُوع (yašūʕ, Joshua) and possibly عِيسَى (ʕīsā, Jesus).
