Etymology
From Ancient Greek Βιζύη (Bizúē), the ancient capital of the Asti tribe. The name propably shares the same Thracian root of other placenames like Βῡζᾰ́ντῐον (Būzántion) and Βῑσᾰ́νθη (Bīsánthē).
