Etymology

From وِلایَتی‎ (vilāyatī, “foreign”) and بَین٘گَن‎ (baiṅgan, “eggplant, aubergine”). Cognate with Bengali বিলাতী বেগুন (bilatī begun). Compare with Persian ‎ (gowje-farangi, “European plum”) and Dari بادِنْجانِ رومِی‎ (bādinjān-e rōmī, “Roman aubergine”).
