Etymology
From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (mkwk' /makōg/, “boat”). Compare the Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian մակոյկ (makoyk), Aramaic מָקוֹק (māqōq), Classical Syriac ܡܩܘܩ (māqōq) Arabic مَكُّوك (makkūk). The ‘boat’ → ‘weaver's shuttle’ sense development is common to many languages.
