Borrowed from Aramaic מַרְזְבָא (marzəḇā), מִרְזְבָא (mirzəḇā, gutter, spout, water-pipe), from earlier Aramaic נַרְזְבָא (narzəḇā, drain pipe, gutter), considered a variant of Akkadian 𒄿𒍝𒁉 (naṣṣabū, water outlet, drain); cognate with native ن ض ب (n-ḍ-b) meaning “water disappeared or sank into the earth”, “to drain or dry up”.
