Likely related to آلای (âlây-, “(originally) to smear; (modern) to stain, to pollute”), which is from Proto-Iranian *dauH- (“to smear; to rub”).[1] Compare Sogdian δʾw (“plastering”). The word is not common in classical texts. Unrelated to English layer.
