From Proto-Turkic *kat (“hard”).
Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (qatïğ), Bashkir ҡаты (qatı), Kazakh қатты (qatty), Kyrgyz катуу (katuu), Uzbek qattiq, Tuvan кадыг (kadıg, “hard”).
