غردق

Arabic

Alternative forms

Etymology

Uncertain; while both forms are now about equally distributed, غَرْقَد (ḡarqad) is probably more original, and it may be a blend of غَرِقَ (ḡariqa, to dive in) + رَقَدَ (raqada, to recline) due to the plant serving the feral animals for recess.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ɣar.daq/

Noun

غَرْدَق • (ḡardaq) m (collective, singulative غَرْدَقَة f (ḡardaqa))

  1. nitre bush (Nitraria gen. et spp.)
