Etymology
Variation of ع ظ ي (ʕ-ẓ-y); compare also و ع ظ (w-ʕ-ẓ), "preaching against", and the "reptile" variously identified, named عِظايَة (ʕiẓāya), sometimes a salamander and later even the Gila monster, perhaps lending the association of toxicity.
