Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tara- (to comb), the same root of طراق (tarak, comb); cognate with Azerbaijani daramaq, Bashkir тарау (taraw), Kazakh тарау (tarau), Kyrgyz тароо (taroo), Tatar таратырга (taratırga), Turkmen daramak and Uzbek taramoq.

  2. (transitive) to hackle, to separate the coarse part of flex or hemp from the fine
  3. (transitive) to rake, to collect debris or grass with a toothed implement
