Etymology

From Arabic سَطَرَ‎ (saṭara). Compare Hebrew סְטִירָה‎ (s'tira, “slap”). The /s/ became fully emphasised due to proximity to an emphatic. Compare similar development for the word for ruler from the same root: مصطرة‎ (maṣṭara), and the word for line, row: صطر‎ (ṣaṭir).
