Apparently from Coptic ϣⲁⲗⲟⲩⲕⲓ (šalouki), ⲥⲁⲗⲟⲩⲕⲓ (salouki), from Egyptian šlq, alternative form of šrq, which also passed as شَرُّوك (šarrūk, “Schilbe”).
