Interjection

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰه • (subḥāna llāh)

  1. glory to God; praise the Lord
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 27:8:
      فَلَمَّا جَاءَهَا نُودِيَ أَن بُورِكَ مَن فِي النَّارِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا وَسُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
      fa-lammā jāʔahā nūdiya ʔan būrika man fī n-nāri wa-man ḥawlahā wa-subḥāna llāhi rabbi l-ʕālamīna
      But when he came to it, he was called, “Blessed is the one at the fire, and whoever is around it! Glory be to God, the Lord of all worlds.”
  2. an expression of surprise, wow!
