From Middle Persian sʾmʾn' (sāmān, “limit, boundary”), related to سامه (sâme, “condition, bet”). Cognate with Mazanderani سامون (sāmun, “land, border”). Akin to Old Armenian սահման (sahman); an Iranian borrowing.
