Borrowed from Ancient Greek ζίζυφον (zízuphon). Doublet of زِفْزِف (zifzif) and زُفَيْزَف (zufayzaf, jujube). The meaning of oleaster is also encountered in Modern Greek τζιτζιφιά (tzitzifiá).
